In Being There. Vietnam War and Other Stories. Rod Carlson writes that the Marine pilots he flew with were the best men he’d ever know. His stories strap you into a helicopter pilot’s seat, take you into combat the way only the “fortunate few” have ever seen war and why flying with those heroic men made it the best of times and their deaths made it the worst of times. His other stories focus on surviving officer training, going to war and still others on veterans grappling with civilian life. While veterans typically keep Vietnam to themselves; “You had to be there to understand,” they say, being there is what these stories are all about … they’ll take you there and let you see for yourself.

It was a different war. I was too old (thank god) to fight in it. My Southeast Asia days predated Carlson's, when I was in the merchant marine in the late 1950s carrying Catholic Relief rice from Louisiana to Saigon on a Victory ship, talk about coals to Newcastle. But I remember it so well and remember that it was a war of draftees. Today we celebrate the warriors who return from the Middle East and sometimes forget that they are careerists, doing what they have chosen to do. Carlson and his fellow Marines had no such choice, and he writes about a war not of professionals but of kids who desperately wished they were somewhere, anywhere else. Few can imagine what Being There was really like, but Carlson provides the intensely human insights that might help us understand at least a little of it.

Being There Vietnam War and Other Stories Rod Carlson 9781542697026 Books Reviews

"Being There" is an often riveting and always well-written account of day-to-day life as a Marine aviator flying CH-46 tandem rotor medium lift helicopters during the Vietnam war. Carlson writes from the heart. The reader is transported to the "right seat" on a range of missions - assault, reconnaissance, medevac, resupply and evacuation - flying low level above the rice paddies, rivers and small hills which define coastal South Vietnam, from Hoi An to Danang, Hue and Quang Tri, and inland to mountains and valleys shrouded in mists where the enemy often lurks. Long after the scream of the twin GE T-58 turbine engines has faded into memory, the reader will remember what it was like to actually "be there." M.E. Flater
Real life stories from a real life person recounting memories in such a way I felt her brought me there.
If you warily think to yourself when looking at the cover of Rod Carlson’s, Being There, ‘not another book about Viet Nam,’ you would be sorely mistaken.

Though most of the stories are set in Viet Nam, this book encapsulates the essence of the relationships formed while in the military. The stories tell of associations of men thrust together in conditions and situations that all but make your hair stand on edge. These stories seem unimaginable except to combat soldiers who have walked into battle and experienced war. Each soldier may have his/her rank, expertise or role in the war zone, but the aftermath of going into terrifying situations and coming out the other side leaves behind unseen bonds. Even to their fallen friends, these soldiers remain forever attached.

Rod’s use of description and the pacing of his storytelling bypass thinking and go directly to the heart. Through the lens of his words I could feel the terror which is constantly overridden with whatever it takes to get a person to fly a helicopter in a war zone and focus solely on one thing their fellow man getting to them, getting supplies to them, getting them out, getting them safe. The ongoing challenge of finding ways to accomplish that goal creates a hidden passion that allows them to continue to go out into the unknown of battle.

For this particular author, it seems that once that Marine credo is set in his heart leave no one behind; it plays out even when he returned home, as shown by Rod in the stories of Killing Bob and Miller’s Last Stand.

Military outsiders are offered a peep hole view of not only some of the logistics of war missions on a Marine helicopter but also allowed entry into the inside emotions of being in battle, watching or hearing about friends who died, and moving from a world of necessary numbness to a seemingly normal life once back home.

Don’t buy this book if you have anything else to do, as your to do list will take a back seat as soon as you buckle up for an emotional roller coaster ride.
It was a very good book and I enjoyed reading it
Rod served in Vietnam with my husband. They were in the same hooch. My husband absolutely enjoyed reading Rod's book!
One of the very best collections of stories by a Vietnam veteran. Not only an excellent writer, but has fascinating insights and a wealth of experiences. Makes the reader feel like he/she is right in the moment. Recommend for general audience (non-vets) and families of vets.
Rod Carlson’s Being There is aptly named. As a woman who has only experienced war from the safe distance of a movie or TV screen, I felt privileged to learn what it was really like, moment-to-moment … being there in Vietnam in the company of heroes, whose searing war stories alternately made me laugh, cry, and silently applaud. These brilliantly written accounts stand as a proud monument to a U.S. Marine’s solemn commitment—not only to his country, but to the men and women with whom he serves. Rod Carlson’s insightful, often poetic, narrative personalizes the war, and brings it safely home to its readers.
